Layers of theatre and music

At Bishop Auckland Town Hall

Inspired by the energy of theatre and music, I created two layered sculptures - one of Durham City and the county-wide Brass Festival and the second of a theatre set showing laughing audience, actors, stage and set.

The layers were cut from left over rainscreen cladding - the kind you see on modern buildings across the country. You tend to think of its functional quality on the building more than its beauty, but it can be anodised into as many colours as an artist can conjure up in their paint box. And cut and folded to any size an architect or artist can wish for.

The artwork was hand-drawn originally using a lightbox to see how the layers worked together. It was then converted to CAD so it could be cut out using the latest CNC cutting technology.

The machinery is so precise it picks up all the tiny changes in the angles on the hand-drawn sketches, giving the edges a multi-faceted finish.
